ATP Masters 1000- Monte-Carlo Masters Preview

Monte Carlo Masters will be the third tournament of the 9 Masters’ tournaments to be played during the current ATP tour season. It also marks the start of clay court tournaments (two ATP 250 series), which goes without saying, that the period of the year which Rafael Nadal truly enjoys. His love affair with Monte Carlo is unmatched. He won this tournament ELEVEN times. The only man to do that at any single ATP event since the Open Era.

The tournament kicks off on Sunday, following qualifications on Saturday for remaining 7 slots of the total 56. With three Masters tournaments on Clay, that is a total of 3000 points to be won, will Rafael Nadal continue his domination on the red soil, is something to look forward to.

16 players were seeded with Djokovic and Nadal fitting into top seeds. Top 8 seeds will earn bye’s in their respective first rounds. Alexandar Zverev, Dominic Thiem, Kei Nishikori, Stefanos Tsitsipas, Marin Cilic, and Karen Khachanov make the remaining top 8 seeds.

Qualifying:

28 players will play their respective match ups today in their Qualifying first rounds, followed by second rounds tomorrow to finalize the 7 slots available for the main draw.

Main Draw:

Novak Djokovic [1]: Djokovic made a wonderful comeback in the last 12 months or so. He is now back in free flow and having won this tournament twice, he would be delighted to strengthen his position at the top of ATP rankings.

This year, he participated in 4 tournaments. Winner at Australian Open, the grand slam was just enough to keep his top position at ATP rankings. In the race to ATP finals though, he is on the heels of Roger Federer, who misses out this tournament. So, it is a great opportunity for him to gain the top seed in ATP finals too. The threat is close behind him. If Rafael Nadal goes on to win at this tournament, he could be pushed further down.

Other Results: R16 at Miami Open (Masters 1000) | R32 at BNP Paribas Open (Masters 1000) | Semi Finals at Qatar Open (ATP 250)

He, so far this year, have a win-loss record of 13-3.

Prediction: Finals

Rafael Nadal [2]: If the footage from Rafael Nadal’s academy ahead of the clay season is anything to go by, the king of clay looked back in the mix after pulling himself out of a Semi-Final clash against Roger Federer not long ago.

“Since the first time I came to Monte Carlo, it’s been a love story with this event”

Ranked #2 in ATP Rankings, he is noticeably behind his mates on the road to ATP finals. He had to make up for at least 675 points to catch with his old pal, Roger Federer. He is yet to win a title this year and there is no better place than the tournament where he did it 11 times before. A win here could put him back in the contention to challenge his closest opponent, Djokovic.

Other Results: R16 at Mexican Open (ATP 500) | Semi Finals at BNP Paribas Open (Masters 1000) | Finals at Australian Open (Grand Slam) |

He, so far this year, have a win-loss record of 11-2.

Prediction: Winner

Top 8 Seeds: (remaining)
